Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Create Designs  for Progressive, Transfer, Hot Stamp, Blank and Tube Dies, Develop/design prototype tooling, Perform CAE Simulation for automotive vehicle stampings and assemblies in accordance to customer supplied CAD models and specifications.

 

 

JOB/TASK FUNCTIONS:

The following job/task functions have been identified as the core functions of this position.  However, the supervisor or manager may assign additional duties associated with this position.

 

  • Perform and interpret part simulation for formability, spring back, thickening and thinning using CAE software.
  • Apply CAE results to create viable strip layouts and form geometry
  • Maintain records of all activities and results in CAE project folders
  • Develop Strip layout strategies that meet the dimensional and usage intent of the customer
  • Create designs for Progressive, Transfer, Hot Stamp, Blank and Tube Dies using parametric modeling software
  • Develop/design prototype tooling
  • Leverage and promote current and new CAE tools/methodology for continuous improvement initiatives
  • Implement engineering changes as required
  • Develop alternative design solutions and/or quick engineering solutions for complex problems
  • Participate in design review meetings to provide appropriate recommendations
  • Ensure that all work carried out is in compliance with company design, safety, quality, environmental compliance and procedural standards
  • Assist management in establishing and updating project plans and priorities
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with all levels of the organization
  • Understand customer basic requirements and expectations for new product design and improved designs
  • Review and recommend materials used in the tool designs
  • Champion external design reviews (Simulation, strip layout, preliminary design and final design). Responsible for the completion of all associated checklists and the communication and implementation of any corrections
  • Participate in weekly departmental meeting and continuous improvement activities as asked
  • Mentor/train team members on new technology

Job Requirements

 



Required Skills

  • Strong understanding of the application and interpretation of GD&T.
  • Working knowledge of parametric design software (KeyCreator, Inventor, Solid Works, AutoCad, or other solids based CAD design software) 
  • Ability to manipulate complex CAD surfacing, including NURBS surfaces
  • Working knowledge of CAE simulation software
  • Proficiency using standard business software (including MS Office)
  • Able to correctly use Micrometers, Calipers and Scales
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills
  • Willing and able to work additional hours (including weekends) to support department needs
  • Supports TS16949 and ISO-9001:2015 standards.


 



Customer Specific Requirements

 

Develop working knowledge of L&W Engineering Die Design Standards.

Education and/or Experience: 

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from four-year College or university; or eight years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
